Oppose inclusion of the Senate-passed interchange provision of Financial Reform Bill and save Credit Unions Debit Card Programs. As you may have seen, the US Senate approved the Financial Regulatory Reform Bill last week. There is one provision in the bill which is of great concern to credit union members. The provision allows the limitation of fees that merchants pay when a consumer pays with a debit card. By choosing to accept credit and debit card payments, merchants receive tremendous benefits such as immediate payment. They do not have to wait for a check to clear. For a merchant, the interchange fee is a cost of doing business, the same as rent and electricity. Credit unions incur significant expense to operate the card payment system and its backup support like call centers and administration. These costs are supported by interchange. If the interchange fees were to be reduced, credit unions would be forced to raise rates and fees for card services or even possibly curtail those services all together.

ACTION NEEDED: Please send a message to your federal legislators today urging them to oppose inclusion of the Senate-passed interchange provision in the financial reform bill.
