The Guy L. Comes Scholarship of $1,500 is now accepting applications for 2026.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicant must be a graduating high school senior or returning to an institution of higher education

  • Applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher

  • Applicant must provide a transcript and a letter of recommendation (from a guidance counselor, teacher, employer or religious leader) with the completed application

  • Applicant must have an open account with POECU or be sponsored by a Family Member with an open POECU share account.

    • *Any non-member is invited to apply for POECU Membership to become eligible to apply for the scholarship.

THE DEADLINE FOR THIS APPLICATION IS Sunday, APRIL 19, 2026

This scholarship was established in memory of Guy L. Comes, who served on POECU’s Board of Directors for 49 years, with 25 of those years as Board Chairman. This scholarship is open to POECU members graduating from high school and is based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and social responsibility.

Guy L. Comes Memorial Scholarship Recipient 2025 - Jamari Butler

POCU awarded the 2025 Guy L. Comes $1500 Memorial Scholarship to Jamari Butler, a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School. Jamari graduated with high honors, having maintained a 3.8 grade point average. She was the President of the Slam Poetry club and on the Student Leadership Team where she tutored other students. She was also a school ambassador who spoke with prospective students and their parents. She excelled at athletics and creative arts as member of the Varsity Volleyball team, Talented Advanced Theater, Choir, Black Girls United, and Crochet for a Cause. Jamari will be attending Florida A&M University to pursue a degree in Psychology driven by her intent to break the stigma surrounding black mental health issues and advocate for better resources to ensure the care, representation and understanding they deserve.

Guy L. Comes Memorial Scholarship Recipient 2024 - Nathan Ruda

Post Office Employees’ Credit Union (POECU) awarded the 2024 Guy C. Comes $1,000 Memorial Scholarship to Nathan Ruda, son of Vincent and Lynn Ruda and a 2024 graduate of Northshore High School in Slidell, Louisiana. Mr. Ruda graduated with a cumulative grade point average of 4.24 and has already earned 36 dual enrollment college credit hours through advanced placement testing program and dual enrollment classes. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Northshore BETA club. Nathan excelled not only in academics but also in athletics as a member of Northshore High School’s Track and Field Team, the Cross Country Team, and the Powerlifting Team.

Nathan’s plans to study Civil Engineering at Mississippi State University stem from the realization that the projects and structures he will create will be used by millions of people during their lifetime, which makes a strong positive impact on the community and the world.
